Chairman's Welcome

Fairview South, Inc.
Economic Council Chairman
W. Martin Bonan

It comes as no surprise that for several decades, Floridians have enjoyed a robust economy fueled by tourism, construction, and real estate. If Martin County and the state of Florida are to be competitive in these trying economic times, then we must continue to support our existing industry segments while transitioning to a more innovative, knowledge based economy. The Economic Council shares this sense of urgency and vision and is currently working with many key stakeholders and partners around the state to accomplish this goal.

To lead Martin County’s efforts, the Economic Council Board of Directors and Committees are focused on three key areas: diversifying our economy, increasing leadership development opportunities, and improving our business climate.

As an economic development organization focused on policy, we believe that our community's ability to retain and recruit innovative, higher wage, knowledge-based industries must include these key objectives: the pursuit of a fee-based customs facility located at Witham Field, establishing an innovative research and technology Campus in Martin County, assisting with regulatory reform, establishing a Public/Private partnership to create a county-wide high speed broadband network, and improving our transportation/infrastructure systems.

Although Martin County has an exceptional "A rated” school district, we must continue to enhance our educational and career opportunities for both our youth and citizens in order to retain the talent and diversify our economy. Our education committee is working on three initiatives: expanding the knowledge of the free enterprise systems through expansion of Junior Achievement within our schools, revising and enhancing our career academies, and promoting the S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS, and Math) initiatives within our school's curriculum.

As Chairman, I am proud of the various leadership roles provided by our Council members. As we celebrate our 26th anniversary, we remain committed to the Council’s mission and economic development efforts focused on job creation and enhancing the quality of life of all citizens.
