Recent Accomplishments

Contributed to the formulation and passage of the Economic Stimulus Package consisting of job creation incentives, impact fee mitigation and establishment of an economic development fund.

Led the creation of the Martin County Life Science Initiatives - a formal collaboration among academia, business, government and health care organizations committed to nurturing technology, education and innovation opportunities for Martin County. Provided vision for a research campus in Martin County, support for the Willoughby Research Park, participation in the BioFlorida Conference and participation in marketing our region as Florida’s Research Coast.

Advocated for various Business Incentives such as: access to alternative financing in the passage of a Community Development District overlay, Three Year Time Table Extensions for developments in progress, creation of SR 76 LLC group to provide improvements and expand traffic concurrency on SR 76.

Advocacy for the Marine Industry including: protection against the loss of waterfront industries, support of Amendment 6, Manatee Pocket Dredging, business expansions such as Hinckley Yachts, Southpoint Anchorage and Riverside Marina.

Advocated for the Aviation Industry including: passage of FAA proposal clarifying boundary definitions, safety zone compliances, facility revitalization and business expansion of Fixed Based Operators, and provided input on Airport Business Development Plan.

Campaigned for the amendment of selected county ordinances, including the Evaluation and Appraisal Report (E.A.R.) language, Article 10 revisions, and streamlining Development Review process and fees, passage of the 4% bed tax to underwrite capital improvements and funding of Arts Council, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission.

Promoted the need to televise of School Board Meetings, and Adoption of the School Facilities Planning and Siting Element within the Comprehensive Plan.

Provided grant support for various community projects such as: The Elliott Museum, Historical Society’s Cultural Heritage and Nature Tourism, IRSC’s Entrepreneurial Development Institute Lunch and Learn Series, City of Stuart’s technical assistance grant from the EPA, and the artificial reef construction grant application from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Collaborated in statewide economic development efforts -- with Jack Shreve, Senior Council to the Governor, Mary Helen Blakeslee and Dr. Dave Brill, of the Office of Trade, Tourism, and Economic Development on such projects as Economic Gardening and alternative energy programs.

Published "Making Cents” – the Community Economic Indicators Report.

Commissioned economist, William Fruth, of POLICOM to provide a Historical, Comparative Economic Analysis Report, and present finding of the economy to the Board of County Commission and membership.

Activities

Our accomplishments are realized through the ongoing activities and commitments of our strong committees and tireless members and volunteers. Our strong organizational structure provides opportunities for involvement in various committees such as Education, Economic, Life-Science, Leadership, Public Relations, Membership, Junior Achievement, Governmental Affairs and Relations.

The Council hosts monthly membership breakfast/luncheon meetings offering insight on community, state and federal issues with dynamic keynote speakers. Past speakers have included Armando Olivera, President of Florida Power and Light, C. Russell Allen, CEO of BioFlorida, Dr. Jennifer Languell, Founder of Trifecta and spokesperson for Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth, Joe Connolly- Town Manager of Jupiter Island, Wayne H Huzengia, Knight Kipplinger, Dr. Dale Brill, Dr. Edwin Massey, Indian River State College, and John Textor of Digital Domain among others.  

In addition, we research, monitor and analyze issues that may impact either our quality of life or the business climate of Martin County and communicate this information to the public and government.
